Conservative dentistry includes various kinds of direct and indirect restorations and is concerned with the conservation of single teeth in the mouth. Conservative dentistry means the restoration functionally and aesthetically of patient?s original tooth, including dental fillings (new fillings and replacement), root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays and onlays.
Conservative dentistry focuses on saving natural teeth that have defects due to dental caries, trauma, abrasion or attrition, and esthetic disharmony including developmental anomalies or tooth discoloration, as well as pulpal and/or periapical diseases to maintain their inherent masticatory, phonetic and esthetic function and the physiologic integrity in harmonious relationship with the adjacent hard and soft tissues through diagnosis, treatment, post-op evaluation and prevention.
Conservative dentistry has three sub-specialties:
Operative dentistry
It is the prevention and the treatment of tooth enamel and tooth cavity. Operative dentistry is responsible to restore up dental condition functionally and aesthetically to an adequate level and also to have good oral health.
Cariology
It is the prevention and the treatment of the tooth surface.
Endodontics
It deals with the roots of the tooth and its disease. Even at a healthy tooth surface can be a problem with the roots which can be very painful. The dentist must remove the diseased pulp during a root canal treatment and make the necessary fillings, this procedure called as endodontic treatment.
